Cormier Wants Contender Next: “Give Me Lil Nog”

Following Daniel Cormier’s win over Roy Nelson at UFC 166, it didn’t take  long for him to be asked about the possibility of fighting Alexander Gustafsson in his light-heavyweight debut next year. After all, since Cormier is one of the planet’s top heavyweights and is gunning for a title shot, why not have him fight the #1 contender? Who is also looking for a fight? Sounds pretty good right?

Well, as it turns out, Cormier apparently isn’t interested in making his first cut to 205 overseas in Sweden, where Gustafsson is expected to fight next. “DC” mentioned his uneasiness about fighting in Europe when the fight was first proposed, and on the latest edition of “UFC Tonight”, he echoed those sentiments.

“I have no problem fighting Alexander Gustafsson, but my concern is Alexander is going to fight in Europe somewhere next. I don’t want to make my first cut down to 205 oversees. I need food here in the US. I would fight him, but I’d rather not do it overseas.”

So, unless the UFC changes plans or absolutely insists Cormier makes the trip to Sweden, it looks like that fight’s out. Naturally, Cormier was asked who else he’s interested in fighting then, and the renowned wrestler stated:

“I want the fights that matter, that I need if I’m going to fight for the title. Moving to 205, I wanted to fight for the title. I want big fights. Give me Lil’ Nog. I want big fights that will make me a contender.”

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is currently ranked #5, is coming off a win over Rashad Evans, and isn’t booked to fight anyone, so that’s a possibility. Phil Davis, who is ranked #3, also isn’t signed to fight anyone. That said, the UFC also has to factor in who they want to have “The Mauler” fight next, and Davis probably isn’t an option.
