Birds That Do Not Migrate

The common thought amongst the general public is that when winter comes birds migrate to warmer climates but not all birds do this. The birds that do not migrate are often left struggling for food, warmth and water. These birds need help just so they can survive and there are many things that you can do. But you may be wondering which birds do not migrate.

A commonly known bird is the beautiful red chested robin and this does not migrate as they do not feel the need to do so. However the robin does migrate on a small scale so they can get enough food to survive. The robin is adapted to cope with the cold conditions and they are relatively unaffected by the freezing conditions. The only problem with this is that they do struggle for food as the ground is frozen meaning they cannot get an insects which are in the surface. This is why you should provide food in your garden so that they can eat the correct amount throughout the cold months. As well as food they will need help with water generally because the water will be frozen over during the winter months and this can leave them dehydrated. To prevent this you will need to provide water which is mixed with an ice free solution which prevents the water freezing. This will not harm the bird and it is very affective so it is worth looking at.

Another common bird that does not migrate during the winter is the beloved Woodpecker. There are many species of woodpecker but generally they do not migrate at all. The reason they do not migrate has something to do with where they have their habitat all year round. They normally base themselves in warm holes in trees and this prevents them being affected by wind, rain and snow. This means that they can stay warm all year round and the food they eat is also unaffected by the cold weather so they are not affected by the winter. They normally eat insects which hide underneath the bark and these survive throughout the winter, therefore providing enough food for the birds to eat whenever they need it. They do still have a problem with water and this reiterates the fact that you need to provide water for the birds.

The English sparrow is very similar to the Robin in the reasons why they do not migrate. Generally they do not feel the need to because they have also adapted to cope with the cold weather which may be thrown at them. The smaller sparrows how ever do often choose to migrate south because of their size but with there are many more that do not migrate. To prepare for the winter they do try to double their body mass so that if there is a shortage of food they can be prepared for it. They generally go for plants for food and during the winter they do often eat grass and plants that live throughout the winter.

These are just some of the birds that do not migrate but there are many more that all need our help to survive for the duration of the winter. To help the birds survive you need to do your bit to provide them with sufficient food for the winter. There are many foods available from most retailers and it is up to you to find the right stuff. It is advised however to supply a wide range of food so that you can meet the needs of various birds and this includes supply live food and various nuts.

Marcus Finch has a tough job when writing about different kinds of birds. The reason for this is that there are only so many resources that someone can use when writing, but GardenBird.co.uk, bird food suppliers, were luckily able to help him through this and many other articles.

Exhaustive family tree for birds shows recent, rapid diversification

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? A Yale-led scientific team has produced the most comprehensive family tree for birds to date, connecting all living bird species -- nearly 10,000 in total -- and revealing surprising new details about their evolutionary history and its geographic context.

Analysis of the family tree shows when and where birds diversified -- and that birds' diversification rate has increased over the last 50 million years, challenging the conventional wisdom of biodiversity experts.

"It's the first time that we have -- for such a large group of species and with such a high degree of confidence -- the full global picture of diversification in time and space," said biologist Walter Jetz of Yale, lead author of the team's research paper, published Oct. 31 online in the journal Nature.

He continued: "The research highlights how heterogeneously fast diversifying species groups are distributed throughout the family tree and over geographic space. Many parts of the globe have seen a variety of species groups diversify rapidly and recently. All this leads to a diversification rate in birds that has been increasing over the past 50 million years."

The researchers relied heavily on fossil and DNA data, combining them with geographical information to produce the exhaustive family tree, which includes 9,993 species known to be alive now.

"The current zeitgeist in biodiversity science is that the world can fill up quickly," says biologist and co-author Arne Mooers of Simon Fraser University in Canada. "A new distinctive group, like bumblebees or tunafish, first evolves, and, if conditions are right, it quickly radiates to produce a large number of species. These species fill up all the available niches, and then there is nowhere to go. Extinction catches up, and things begin to slow down or stall. For birds the pattern is the opposite: Speciation is actually speeding up, not slowing down."

The researchers attribute the growing rate of avian diversity to an abundance of group-specific adaptations. They hypothesize that the evolution of physical or behavioral innovations in certain groups, combined with the opening of new habitats, has enabled repeated bursts of diversification. Another likely factor has been birds' exceptional mobility, researchers said, which time and again has allowed them to colonize new regions and exploit novel ecological opportunities.

In their analysis, the researchers also expose significant geographic differences in diversification rates. They are higher in the Western Hemisphere than in the Eastern, and higher on islands than mainlands. But surprisingly, they said, there is little difference in rates between the tropics and high latitudes. Regions of especially intense recent diversification include northern North American and Eurasia and southern South America.

"This was one of the big surprises," Jetz said. "For a long time biologists have thought that the vast diversity of tropical species must at least partly be due to greater rates of net species production there. For birds we find no support for this, and groups with fast and slow diversification appear to occur there as much as in the high latitudes. Instead, the answer may lie in the tropics' older age, leading to a greater accumulation of species over time. Global phylogenies like ours will allow further tests of this and other basic hypotheses about life on Earth."

The World's Most Expensive Food and Drink | The Gracevine

Rarity value can demand a high price, so here?s a look at food and drink that fall into the category of unashamedly expensive and utterly decadent, starting right on our doorstep:

While food at Cape Grace is 5-star, it?s still very affordable, but we do have a drink that would only attract a big spender; it?s a shot of Glenfiddich 50 year old whisky at R18,000 a tot! It?s so rare that only 500 bottles were ever made and Cape Grace gets through about one bottle every three years. A couple of months ago in Cape Grace?s Bascule Bar, an American gentleman bought a tot for himself, his two friends and then another for an acquaintance he met in the bar!

Coffee with a Difference:

Have you heard of Kopi Luwak Coffee? It?s Sumatran coffee beans that have passed through the native arboreal civet who eats the coffee berries, which then drop to the ground where they are collected, washed, dried and roasted.? It?s the enzymes in the civet?s stomach that gives this coffee a softer taste and it costs around R100 for a double espresso at Haas Coffee Collective at 67 Rose Street, Bo Kaap, or you can buy a 250g bag of beans for R900.

Brunch with Attitude:

Kopi Luwak Coffee is very small fry in the scheme of really expensive foods, like the Zillion-Dollar Frittata from the popular Norma?s in Le Parker Meridien Hotel, New York City. This brunch of 6 eggs, a whole lobster and 10 ounces of Sevruga caviar goes for $1,000, but you can opt for the poor-man?s version with only one ounce of caviar at a mere $100.

Not-so Humble Burger:

Ok let?s look at one more gourmet extravagance; how about the humble burger turned into haute cuisine by who else but a Frenchman in Las Vegas! At Fleur by Hubert Keller at Mandalay Bay, the FleurBurger 5000 goes for an astonishing $5,000. Why? Because it?s a fois gras and black truffle Kobe beef burgeron a brioche truffle bun with Chef Keller?s special truffle sauce. It comes with a bottle of Chateau Petrus 1995 Bordeaux, chosen to match the dish perfectly, served in Ichendorf Brunello crystal stemware from Sweden, two of which get shipped to your home. Guess how many FleurBurger?s they have sold since 2005 when it first appeared on the menu??????26!Phew!?

Augusta Soup Kitchen Gets A Facelift - WABI TV5

Augusta - The local soup kitchen in Augusta just got a major facelift.

Regular visitors to the Bread of Life Ministries may not recognize the place. "Prior to the renovations we had pretty much white industrial lighting in here. Now we have art lighting, which subdues the atmosphere a little bit," said Executive Director Dean Lachance. "We have brand new flooring instead of the institutional tiles. The wood flooring is kind of a welcoming space."

There's also new air conditioning and new artwork donated by local artists. All of this is the work of the Kennebec Leadership Institute, a Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce program, staffed by about 25 local professionals who volunteered their time as part of the downtown Augusta revitalization project. "They just took it on and raised over $14,000 from different businesses and individuals which allowed them to do the lighting and the signs and the flooring and the air conditioning that came with it," Lachance said.

Patsy Tessier has worked here for the past 11 years and seen this place grow into what it is today, serving on average 36,000 meals per year. "It's evolved," Tessier said. "It was always quite pleasant, but it's certainly got a lot more pleasant and homey feeling."

That homey feeling is what they strive for here, making it seem less like a traditional soup kitchen. "They get to sit down at a table, they get served a meal, they get asked what they want for 4 or 5 choices for a drink. Same with dessert. If we have food left over they're welcome to take a meal home for dinner or for a home bound person that might be out sick."

The Bread of Life Ministries Soup Kitchen is located at 157 Water Street in Augusta.

Brink's Co shares tumble, 3Q profit falls 56 pct

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Shares of The Brink's Co. fell Thursday after the armored car company said its third-quarter net income plunged 56 percent, as revenue and operating earnings from its international business sank.

The Richmond, Va., company said total earnings fell to $13.5 million, or 28 cents per share, from $30.8 million, or 64 cents per share, in last year's quarter. Adjusted earnings were 50 cents per share, excluding severance costs and retirement plan expenses among other items.

Revenue slipped 2 percent to $979 million.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected, on average, earnings of 61 cents per share on $1.01 billion in revenue.

The price of company shares dropped 6.6 percent, or $1.81, to close at $25.57 while broader trading indexes advanced slightly.

Brink's said operating earnings from its international business fell 17 percent to $51 million, while revenue from that business dropped about 2 percent to $744 million. In particular, the company recorded a $4 million government receivable write off in Argentina.

Brink's officials said in a statement that lower results in Latin America countered higher earnings in Europe and North America.

The company's selling, general and administrative expenses also climbed 8 percent to $147.4 million.

Brinks said it still expects revenue for the year to rise 5 percent to 8 percent, implying a range of $4.08 billion to $4.2 billion. Wall Street is expecting revenue of $3.96 billion on average, with estimates ranging from $3.92 billion to $3.99 billion.

Lonely older adults face more health risks

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Always look on the bright side of life. Thanks to a new study from Concordia University, this catchy refrain offers a prescription for staying healthy during one's golden years.

Research has shown that lonely older adults are at greater risk of developing health problems but a new study by Carsten Wrosch, a professor in Concordia's Department of Psychology and member of the Centre for Research in Human Development, offers hope. In a forthcoming article in Psychosomatic Medicine, Wrosch proves that older adults who approach life with a positive outlook can reverse the negative health issues associated with a lonely life.

"Our aim was to see whether using self-protective strategies, such as thinking positively and avoiding self-blame in the context of common age-related threats could prevent lonely older adults from exhibiting increases in stress hormones and inflammatory biomarkers," explains Wrosch, who co-authored the article with Concordia's PhD graduate, Rebecca Rueggeberg, and colleagues Gregory Miller from the University of British Columbia and Thomas McDade from Northwestern University in Illinois.

To test this, the research team followed 122 senior citizens over a six-year period. They measured self-protective strategies with a questionnaire where participants were asked to rate statements such as, "Even if my health is in very difficult condition, I can find something positive in life," or "When I find it impossible to overcome a health problem, I try not to blame myself." The research team also measured loneliness by asking participants to what extent they felt lonely or isolated during a typical day.

Wrosch and his colleagues also used saliva and blood samples to measure how much cortisol and C-reactive protein (CRP) the participants produced. These two biological markers were chosen because cortisol is responsible for stress-related changes in the body; and people with elevated CRP are at increased risk of inflammatory illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Their findings showed that, among lonely older adults, the use of positive thinking helped protect against an increase in cortisol secretion. Four years down the road, further tests showed the participants' CRP levels had improved. In essence, lonely older adults who reframe problematic health circumstances positively and do not blame themselves for negative health issues can decrease health threats associated with stress and inflammation. For those older adults who did not report feelings of loneliness, this type of thinking had no effect -- supposedly because their social networks may help them deal with age-related problems.

Overall, these findings could contribute to successful aging. "It's my hope that our research may improve clinical treatment of lonely older adults," says Wrosch. "Older adults can be taught through counseling or therapy to engage in self-protective thoughts like staying positive when it comes to their own health. That means a better quality of life, both physically and mentally -- something we all want at any age."

Video Game News & Reviews - GAMEBREAKER.TV All Your ...

First and foremost, Ghostcrawler announced via Twitter that, come patch 5.1, it is highly likely that Lesser Charms of Good Fortune will become a currency rather than an item. This is a boon for players who are running a huge amount of daily quests, and thereby amassing thousands of Lesser Charms of Good Fortune, of which only a tiny percentage can be handed in every week, as discussed in Legendary Episode 98. These currently occupy bag space, stacking to a paltry 180, and can only be spent 90 at a time, once a week. In Patch 5.1, these will likely be converted to a currency, meaning that they will move to occupy the same space as honor points, Darkmoon Faire tickets and gold, freeing up valuable bag space. It is unfortunate that players have to wait until 5.1 for this to happen. However, as with most currencies, this may mean that a cap is imposed.

Secondly, while breaking the first rule of Brawler?s Guild by talking about it, new achievements relating to this new feature have started to appear. All the new Brawler?s Guild achievements datamined so far are listed below, and while this is far from an exhaustive list, some are more interesting than others.

These achievement titles are fantastic, really exciting stuff for the Brawler?s Guild. The most interesting one to me is Dirty Fighter. I want to know just exactly what fighting dirty entails!

Content from this point forward contains spoilers! If you don?t want spoilers, stop reading here.

Moving on, four new audio files have been datamined. One features Vol?jin in what appears to be an event or a scenario, in which he says, tellingly, ?This is what the Horde have come to, killing their own.? Vol?jin seems to be one of the first prominent Horde characters to rise up against Garrosh?s rule, which, leading from our post on the Horde going bad last week, seems to point to a widening rift withing the Horde.

Additionally, the Alliance appear to finally be fighting back, with audio featuring Varian Wrynn promising retaliation against the Horde following their attack on his son, Prince Anduin Wrynn. This would point to Anduin being alive after the Horde attack, and it?s great for Alliance players to feel their faction leaders aren?t going to stand for the Horde?s antics any longer.

The latter two audio files contain information about a new in-game item, which has not previously had a great deal of information attached to it. They both pertain to an item called the Divine Bell, which, we learn, was crafted for the Thunder King, an ancient ruler of Pandaria who questers may have seen being reawoken by Zulian Trolls. The bell is said to be ?cast from the maker?s flesh and shaped by stars? fire, and bound by the breath of darkest shadow. When rung, it could shake the world and call to the heavens. Taken to war, it stirs warriors hearts, lending them strength on the field of battle, and struck fear and doubt into the hearts of its enemies?? In the second audio file, we learn that the Horde are too late, the Alliance have already captured the bell and transported it to Darnassus, where they are securing its safety. Could this be how the Alliance retaliate? By using the Divine Bell as some kind of Azerothian WMD?

Italian scientists convicted over quake warning

L'AQUILA, Italy (Reuters) - Six scientists and a government official were sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter by an Italian court on Monday for failing to give adequate warning of an earthquake that killed more than 300 people in L'Aquila in 2009.

The seven, all members of a body called the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks, were accused of negligence and malpractice in evaluating the danger and keeping the central city informed of the risks.

The case has drawn condemnation from international bodies including the American Geophysical Union, which said the risk of litigation may deter scientists from advising governments or even working in seismology and seismic risk assessments.

"The issue here is about miscommunication of science, and we should not be putting responsible scientists who gave measured, scientifically accurate information in prison," Richard Walters of Oxford University's Department of Earth Sciences said.

"This sets a very dangerous precedent and I fear it will discourage other scientists from offering their advice on natural hazards and trying to help society in this way."

The scientists, Franco Barberi, Enzo Boschi, Giulio Selvaggi, Gian Michele Calvi, Claudio Eva and Mauro Dolce as well as Bernardo De Bernardis - a senior official in the Civil Protection Authority - were convicted of criminal manslaughter and causing criminal injury.

The 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck L'Aquila, in the Abruzzo region, at 3:32 a.m. on April 6, wrecking tens of thousands of buildings, injuring more than 1,000 people and killing 308.

At the heart of the case was the question of whether the government-appointed experts gave an overly reassuring picture of the risk facing the town, which contained many ancient and fragile buildings and which had already been partially destroyed three times by earthquakes over the centuries.

The case focused in particular on a series of low-level tremors that hit the region in the months preceding the earthquake and which prosecutors said should have warned experts not to underestimate the risk of a major shock.

Eva's lawyer Alfredo Biondi said the decision was "wrong in both fact and law" but the verdict, delivered in a tiny improvised court room in an industrial zone outside the still-wrecked city center, was welcomed by relatives of the victims.

"This is not thirst for revenge, it is just that our sister is not coming back," said Claudia Carosi.

More than three years later, much of the once-beautiful medieval city is still in ruins and thousands of people have been unable to return to their homes.

Defense lawyers said earthquakes could not be predicted and even if they could, nothing could be done to prevent them.

"If an event cannot be foreseen and, more to the point, cannot be avoided, it is hard to understand how there can be any suggestion of a failure to predict the risk," defense lawyer Franco Coppi said before the verdict was delivered.

"INCOMPLETE, IMPRECISE"

Prosecutors, who had only sought a four-year sentence, said they did not expect scientists to provide a precise forecast.

But they argued the Commission had given "incomplete, imprecise and contradictory" information on the danger after a meeting on March 31, 2009, a few days before the earthquake.

The case is part of a wider controversy over the disaster in L'Aquila, which has been at the center of a series of bitter rows over Italy's disaster preparedness.

Central Italy is continuously shaken by low level tremors, very few of which precede bigger earthquakes and they are generally marked by no more than a brief statement from civil protection authorities.

Key to the dispute is the kind of cautious language, hedged by caveats and reserves which scientists typically use in predicting highly uncertain events, but which can be of limited use as a guideline for the general public.

According to scientific opinion cited by prosecutors, the dozens of lower level tremors seen before the quake were typical of the kind of preliminary seismic activity seen before major earthquakes such as the one that struck on April 6.

Instead of highlighting the danger, they said the experts had made statements playing down the threat of a repeat of the earthquakes which wrecked the town in 1349, 1461 and 1703, saying the smaller shocks were a "normal geological phenomenon".

Italy is among the most earthquake-prone countries in Europe and has been struck repeatedly by lethal shocks, most recently in May 2012, when 16 people were killed and hundreds injured by a 5.8 tremor in the Emilia Romagna region.

How much will HDTVs cost on Black Friday? A lot less, says expert

11 hrs.

This year will go down as a very bad one for TV makers. Sony, Panasonic and Sharp posted huge financial losses, dragged down by lower worldwide demand due to the economic slowdowns in Europe and China.

The U.S. HDTV market has also been sluggish. Samsung, Sony and LG instituted Unilateral Pricing Programs?on mid- to high-end models, requiring their dealers to charge the same price. This undoubtedly negatively affected sales. To counter, set makers employed a number of periodic promotions including instant rebates and/or bundles with free Blu-ray players or sound systems.

We at HD Guru consulted our industry contacts, surveyed the best current deals and checked last year?s Black Friday deals to come up with our Black Friday predictions. This year, Black Friday falls on Nov. 23, and will be the biggest shopping day of the year. We?ve listed the HDTVs by size, features and brand.

Before you buy a new HDTV, check out our 2012 list to make sure you are not going to pay more than you should have.

While 32?inches remains the best-selling screen size, the 39- to 42-inch class is closing in on sales volume. While inventories of these two classes are not too bloated, the hottest deals will be in the 55-inch and larger screen sizes as the big screens are not moving as fast as set makers projected.

This segment now has no-name brands competing with the legacy brands, with a number of new entries in the 55- and 60-inch size classes. Vizio just added a 70-inch TV to compete with Sharp, the only other maker of this screen class.

As in recent years, the online e-retailers will be very aggressive with their Black Friday deals and will follow with Cyber Monday deals on Nov. 26. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Best Buy plans to match Amazon and other retailers this holiday season, (with a few yet to be specified exceptions). This could be a game changer and really heat up the competition. We will follow up, once Best Buy?s holiday policies are released.

For those of you considering a Vizio or a no-name TV, please read our disposable TV article here. Thinking about an extended warranty? Learn how to get the best deal and how to get up to a one year extended for free here.

Shop off-season for major home improvements | Farm and Dairy ...

?

NEW YORK ? An often overlooked side-effect of the recession is that many people cannot afford to move and have decided to stick with the home they have and make desired improvements.

Thanks to off-season discounts, some months of the year may be better than others for renovations. The home improvement industry is not much different than any other. When demand is high, prices are generally at their peak. When demand is low, prices are lowered to entice shoppers to buy.

Shop smart

Right now, many homeowners may be thinking of certain improvements, such as the installation of a pool or deck, or even replacing an air conditioning system in advance of the warm weather. But it could be financially savvy to wait until the warm weather is gone to do so.

Many pool companies and stores discount their inventory considerably after September. That?s because this time of year in most of the country is when the weather starts to change and people are less likely to think about a dip in the pool

Furthermore, in an effort to capitalize on both the summer and winter seasons, many pool stores double as Christmas tree and accessory outlets come the colder months. That means they?ll need to clear out their showrooms and stock areas of pools prior to delivery of Christmas merchandise. You may land a considerable discount on the pool package.

Plus, if you have room in a garage or shed to store the pool equipment and assembled materials, you can wait until the next season to hire an installer to set up the pool when you desire.

Hot and cold

As you are thinking about turning down the thermostat and enjoying a blast of cool air-conditioning, it might be wise to think about the performance of your furnace, too. While HVAC professionals and home improvement chains could be charging top dollar for a new air conditioning system, they may offer discounts on furnaces because they?re simply not in demand this time of year.

If you find an affordable furnace, store the furnace until the time is right to have it installed.

Remodel in late December. The holiday season tends to be a slow time for home-improvement contractors simply because most homeowners are thinking more about shopping and entertaining than knock-down, tear-out jobs. Waiting until the end of the year for some major renovations could be advantageous.

The spring and summer are prime times for outdoor entertaining, so the addition of decks or elaborate landscaping may come at an elevated price. However, once autumn arrives, the same services may be much cheaper, depending on the job and if the contractor can secure materials at a discounted price.

If you can hold off on that new deck or patio until after September, it may be in your best interest. However, if a winter installation is in your design, you may find yourself actually paying more in labor costs if inclement weather delays the installation.

Other tips

Explore wintertime reductions on air conditioning systems.

New appliance models released could mean year-end reductions on that model year.

Purchase bulk topsoil and other landscaping materials in the winter when this industry is slow.

Many pests enter a dormancy during the winter, so exterminators may discount for termite reduction during the winter and early spring.

Fireplace installation or chimney masonry work could be discounted during the summer months.

The spring season is an ideal time for roofing projects, although some contractors will work in the winter, too. Roofing companies are often tied up during the summer months and may ask for premium charges.

Keep in mind that summer is a prime time for any and all improvements. Beat the prices and the wait time by shopping off-season for your renovations.

October 19th, 2012 ?|? Published in plumbing

Plumbing tips aren?t hard to come by, but plumbing tips from the experts are. Mr. Rooter? Plumbing has dedicated the space below to answering your questions with knowledge that comes from years of experience.

ge pic Weekly Mr. Rooter Plumbing Tip: Natural Gas Water Heater Safety

WEEKLY TIP: Natural Gas Water Heater Safety
On gas tankless water heaters, the most important part of the system is the gas vent. Proper venting is crucial for a gas tankless water system because carbon monoxide is a byproduct of heating your water with a gas-based system. Gas vents should be as short as possible for safety and efficiency.

If you are doing a water heater installation yourself, know that you are not allowed to tie a gas vent into an existing chimney or other masonry-based vents, which are unable to vent the dangerous carbon monoxide properly without structural damage. You should only use stainless steel vent material called Category Three AL29-4C stainless steel.

Granny Smith updated to make latest levels easier

Android Central

One of the more popular games as of late, Granny Smith, has just received an interesting update to make its latest levels easier to complete. Following many user complaints that the new "space" levels were too difficult, game developer Mediocre released the update to ease the pain of the tough levels.

It's a tough line to walk if you're a game developer, not wanting your so-called "casual" game to be too difficult, but again you don't want to overdo it and make the levels too easy. Either way you're likely to have some users disappointed by the difficulty of the game. Mediocre saw the response and reacted to user input, which is something that needs to be noted regardless.

If you've yet to try out Granny Smith, it's certainly still worth a purchase and you can find it at the Google Play Store link above.

Independent online work: the next BPO trend in the Philippines? - e27

Filipinos are increasingly taking to the Internet to find freelance work. Is this the next big trend in the local BPO industry?

There?s a storm brewing in the technopreneur ecosystem in the Philippines. And it?s not made up of teams wanting to build the next big thing. Rather, it?s a slew of independent contractors offering their services online to employers around the globe.

A report by Reuters? Jeremy Wagstaff speaks of online freelancers remaking the outsourcing industry. Jeremy writes that this commercial crowdsourcing of content is ?already disrupting traditional outsourcing ? from preparing tax statements to conducting research on pediatricians.? A World Bank researcher says ?[n]ow you can farm out your work to anyone in the world.?

The enablers are the usual suspects: services like oDesk, Freelancer.com and Elance. Armed with a capable computer and a decent Internet connection, contractors from around the Philippines (and other countries) can bid for projects ranging from writing short articles, web design, programming, transcription, accounting, and a whole lot more.

The main advantage here is cost. Compared with established BPO companies ? majority of which are call centers ? clients have direct access to contractors, and can therefore deal with lower costs per transaction.

For instance, an oDesk contractor can start at something like $1.50 per hour, progressing to a higher rate as one becomes more experienced. oDesk says the average contractor gets 190% growth in earnings after three years using the service.

But is independent online work the silver bullet that can help address poverty and unemployment in the country? Let?s consider a few factors.

Knowledge of English. Filipinos speak English as a second official language. We have an advantage over other fellow Asians because of the more or less neutral nature of our accents, and our familiarity with western culture. However, not everyone can write or speak English well enough to warrant writing or taking calls for a living. This is where services like Kalibrr that addresses this skills gap can help.

Low barrier to entry. Services like oDesk would usually require access to the Internet. For a contractor, this means a desktop or notebook computer and broadband. Folks who cannot afford to buy their own computer and pay for broadband service can work from Internet cafes or such shared workspaces.

Quality of work. Freelancing services like oDesk are a mixed bag. While I have chanced upon a few potentially big projects, a majority of projects on freelancing sites pay very low per-unit prices. A contractor can perhaps earn well enough with volume, but getting paid $0.50 for a 500-word article sounds like highway robbery!

oDesk says that Filipinos mostly work on blog and article writing and data entry. Research and graphic design closely follow. This is a stark difference to India,?Indonesia?and Pakistan, where the bulk of work is in web programming and web design.

Security. Online freelancing sites always come with concerns on scam projects, which may include non-paying employers, bogus projects and even illegal work. Independent contractors should be on the lookout for these issues.

Challenges ahead

Filipinos have already established a strong presence on freelancing services, where one can do outsourced work without having to commute to work in the ungodly hours of the day. But while traditional BPO companies have support from the government and other stakeholders, independent contractors don?t always enjoy benefits. For instance, we already mentioned health benefits and social security.

Employment benefits.?The benefits of freelance work are mostly monetary. Not being connected with a local company, contractors do not enjoy health benefits and employer contributions to social security.?Independent contractors don?t enjoy status as employed individuals. How do they go about with contributing to social security, PAG-IBIG or PhilHealth? Contractors don?t have paid leaves for illness, vacation, maternity and the like.

What about taxes? Bangladesh has already declared online income to be tax-free. The Philippine government does not tax income by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). As independent online contractors bring in ? and spend ? dollars in the country, shouldn?t they be also subject to the same exemptions?

For instance, independent contractors are at a loss whether to pay taxes as self-employed individuals. Most are not even aware of the processes involved, which includes applying for a business permit and registering a trade name.

Institutional support. The industry is comprised of individuals independently offering services. As such, there is little organization and stakeholders usually have to fend for themselves. Perhaps being better-organized will enable independent online workers to enjoy better support and protection.

Work from any island in the Philippines?

In the recently-concluded PhilDev Economic Forum, Google vice president for infrastructure, Dr. Eric Brewer, had a goal for the Philippines, which was the ability to develop software from any island in the country. To some extent, we?re already doing this, although in a different form. Filipinos can be productive from any region, any province, any island, for as long as there is an Internet connection decent enough to find and submit work.

There are countless opportunities out there, and Filipinos don?t even have to wait for a BPO company to set up shop in town. But we can only do so much from the corner Internet cafe running a 1 MBPS DSL connection, or from a low-powered netbook computer connected through a mobile broadband stick.

What can we do to better catch and benefit from the next BPO wave?

JPMorgan cuts banker pay, a sign of more frugal times on Wall Street

(Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co's investment bank set aside less revenue to pay employees last quarter, another sign that Wall Street bonuses are on the decline this year.

The investment bank put aside $2.07 billion for pay in the third quarter, or 32 percent of net revenue excluding a special accounting charge. That's down from 41 percent a year ago.

Typically JPMorgan aims to pay its bankers anywhere from 35 to 40 percent of revenue, but Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said on Friday that he is now targeting the low end of that range.

"As a rule of thumb, I would think about 35 percent being a good number," Dimon said on a conference call with analysts.

He went on to note that the investment bank's low expenses helped it posted a 40 percent pretax profit margin: "That's pretty good. If we can sustain that, I would be a very happy guy in a competitive environment."

The ratio of compensation to revenue is a closely watched metric on Wall Street, particularly in recent quarters as trading and deal-making revenue has come under pressure, and investors have demanded better returns.

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said earlier this week that he expects cash bonuses paid to securities industry workers who live in New York City to decline this year, for the second year in a row.

Richard Lipstein, a managing director with the recruiting firm Gilbert Tweed International, said that after months of job cuts across Wall Street, management has a greater ability to cut workers' pay because they cannot find other jobs as easily.

"In the battle between labor and management on Wall Street, management may finally be getting the upper hand," said Lipstein. "If tons of people leave, they'll lose it. But given the environment, it's tough to imagine that they're going to walk out the door unless they feel egregiously underpaid."

So far this year, the bank set aside just $269,703 for the average investment banking employee, versus $289,611 for the first nine months of 2011, a 7 percent drop. That compares with a 16 percent net revenue decline, excluding accounting charges.

Bonus decisions won't be finalized til year-end and JPMorgan, which typically pays less than competitors, is not necessarily an indication of how pay across Wall Street is changing.

The typical rule of thumb for Wall Street firms is a 50 percent compensation ratio and JPMorgan's chief competitors, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Morgan Stanley , regularly pay out greater portions of revenue in compensation than JPMorgan does. Some smaller firms like Jefferies Inc and Lazard Ltd often hand out more than 60 percent of revenue to employees.

JPMorgan is the first big bank to report earnings.

Goldman, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America Corp and Citigroup Inc will report results next week, giving a fuller picture of what Wall Street bonuses may look like this year.

Canada News Centre - Work Begins on University of Manitoba's ...

Winnipeg, Manitoba, October 11, 2012 ? Dignitaries gathered today to celebrate the start of construction of the new Active Living Centre, at the University of Manitoba. On hand were Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger, the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport) and Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia, Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz, University of Manitoba President David Barnard, and former University of Manitoba Bison football player (and current National Football League player) Israel Idonije.

"We're creating new opportunities for people of all ages to get active, right in their community, because it's a priority for Manitobans and because we know it will have lasting benefits well into the future."

"Our Government is proud to support the construction of this world-class sport and fitness centre - one of the largest of its kind in Manitoba," said Minister of State Fletcher. "The City of Winnipeg is pleased to support the Active Living Centre with $2.5?million obtained from the sale of the Polo Park stadium site," said Mayor Katz. "Students and staff at the University of Manitoba campus come from all corners of Winnipeg. Soon they will have the opportunity to build active living into their academic day, with a modern, bright fitness facility."

"The Active Living Centre builds on the transformative change at the University of Manitoba in the spaces where we live, work, study, discover and play," said Dr. Barnard. "Not only will the centre become a primary gateway to the heart of campus, but it will also enhance significantly the University of Manitoba's commitment to a culture of active, sustainable living."

Each year, more than 7,800?students and 1,000?staff and community members use the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management's facility at the University of Manitoba. The Faculty promotes sport and active living through various university and community programs for people of all ages and will be home to the new Active Living Centre.

The new four-storey, open-concept facility, with its luminous glass exterior, will house a high-performance training facility for elite athletes, a state-of-the-art indoor running track, a 12-metre climbing wall, an Applied Research Centre, a gathering area for students, strength and conditioning facilities, and three group workout studios.

The $46,000,000 centre (which is the keystone part of a group of Active Living Projects worth $59,000,000) received joint federal and provincial funding of $20?million under the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund. The City of Winnipeg is also providing $2.5?million of the net proceeds from the sale of the Polo Park Stadium site, with the balance of the funding being provided by the University of Manitoba.

This 100,000-square-foot facility will support an active lifestyle for students, staff, and the community alike. The new Active Living Centre will replace the current fitness facility (dubbed the "Gritty Grotto"). Upon its completion in 2015, this modern, eco-friendly building will accommodate more than 2,000 patrons per day, making it the largest active living facility in Manitoba.
