WEEKLY TIP: Natural Gas Water Heater Safety
On gas tankless water heaters, the most important part of the system is the gas vent. Proper venting is crucial for a gas tankless water system because carbon monoxide is a byproduct of heating your water with a gas-based system. Gas vents should be as short as possible for safety and efficiency.

If you are doing a water heater installation yourself, know that you are not allowed to tie a gas vent into an existing chimney or other masonry-based vents, which are unable to vent the dangerous carbon monoxide properly without structural damage. You should only use stainless steel vent material called Category Three AL29-4C stainless steel.
