Welcome to the CostofWork?s series ?The HR Rap Session.? Every so often I like to invite a couple of HR folks to guest contribute but in a conversational style format. Whenever I think about asking someone to participate I try to select people that I like hearing from and I think has a usually approach. The theme of this session is ?HR: They Way I See It? and we have Mr. John P. Hudson who is an all-round great guy practicing HR at one of the nation?s leading brands and Nicole Ochenduski, HR professional representing the Buckeye state. She brings a fresh, open POV to this Twittersphere HR group.
Before we get started, let me set this thing off with the way I see HR; you either love it or you don?t. I?ve learned there are so many folks practicing HR everyday who hate it, they just want to get paid and bounce. I can?t relate to those people and they will never relate to me.? After my first training class, I knew HR was for me. I?ve done everything within my power to stay engaged, active and relevant in the profession.? You see, once upon a time I lost HR. She was gone and my life was miserable; I was living through see-nothing days. I was doing meaningless work, unfulfilling and senseless. But you see human resources is not meaningless, HR has value. If you hate it, get out, or at least get away from me because the way I see it, it?s the most important function of a business. I won?t take it for granted again.
And with that, here?s John P Hudson to tell you about HR; the way he sees it. GO.
I?m honored to be able to participate in this guest post series.? It?s very humbling and there is a lot of pressure to be able to live up to the expectations of this blog, its owner and the past guest posters before me.
Chris asked for me to comment on HR as I see it.? Although there are a few things I could go negative about (the eternal, unnecessary need for validation from the C-suite), there is a lot to be excited about currently and in the future.
Everyone in HR has their opinion about what HR should be or how we view HR.? With all due respect to Fletch, it?s not all ball bearings; it?s all about perceptions.? What do our leaders and clients perceive HR to be? That is the real question.? What are we doing to change that?? It doesn?t matter if we are in a Specialist role like Comp, Staffing or Benefits or in the Generalist role.? Whether we like it or not, our client?s only see us as ?HR.?? They don?t care about all of our different roles.? Their paycheck is messed up? They can?t access their benefit provider? They want training for their staff? They need to hire a new employee?? That?s HR.? We are either helping or hindering them from getting stuff done.? Quit the in-fighting?.it looks silly. There is a reason the HRCI requires all of those areas for the PHR/SPHR/GPHR certs.? We don?t have to be experts in all, but we better know our way around and how to find answers and provide solutions.
So your organization doesn?t have a well-established talent community, with integrated social media presence through your career site and the systems to deliver Big Data? Big Deal!? How can you make an impact on your organization?s leaders and employees?? What can you provide to make their lives easier?? Maybe it?s providing some access to free training or development resources.? Maybe you were able to coordinate an onsite flu clinic with your healthcare provider.? Maybe you got better food options in the vending machine.? These small wins can help you build credibility.? They open the door for you to be able to do other things.
I have seen a lot of changes in the HR space over the years.? The integration of technology and the systems improvements are incredible. ?One thing that has not changed, though, is the amazing generosity and willingness to help within the HR community.? We are the most selfless, supportive community I?ve been a part of.? And with the explosion of social media, our options are even greater.? All you have to do is ask for some help.? Tweet for some assistance.? ?Join a LinkedIn group and share.? Be willing to share when others they are asking for help.? We are all in the same boat and there is nothing better than seeing others succeed.
