Giving Thanks: Scientists Seek World Record for Most Pieces of Used Toilet Paper Collected

?Once the diversity of the microbial world is catalogued? it will make astronomy look like a pitiful science.? ?Julian Davies

For Neil Armstrong, the big step was the moon. For Jeff Leach it is the colon.

Jeff Leach called me not so long ago to ask me about mine. Well, that isn?t totally right. He called to tell me about other peoples. Is that worse?

In the colon live ?trillions of bacteria (though such estimates are guesses as wild as those about the numbers of stars), a universe of planet-sized cells just above the sphincter. These bacteria are important, but uncharted. The most poorly known feature of these beasts is how they vary from one person to the next and why. This is a version of the belly button mystery I discussed last week?the mystery of what determines just which microbes you have and depend on (or fight). Leach wants to understand what determines the wild life of your colon, badly.

Most readers of Scientific American are aware that their bodies are covered inside and outside with microbes on which his or her life, odor, and much else depend?their cloak of cells. But this consensus is new. In the 1960s Lynn Margulis posited that the mitochondria in our cells and chloroplasts in plant cells were relictual bacteria, evidence of ancient symbioses. She also argued that symbiosis were everywhere, a dominant feature of evolution. She was right on all counts, the founding mother of the microbiome. She was also ignored. Not long after, Carl Woese went into his lab proposing to look at the nucleotides of bacteria to create evolutionary trees of microbes. He was laughed at, but went on to found modern evolutionary biology. Then, in the 1980s, while using LCD and driving around with his girlfriend Kary Mullis had the idea to use the enzymes in an Archaean (a group of microbes that Woese put on a totally unique branch of the tree of life) to amplify DNA and, in essence, produce much more of it for analysis. Together these accomplishments set the stage for the modern field of microbial ecology and evolution. For all of this work, Margulis, Woese and Mullis were regarded as crazy. Now their accomplishments are so well accepted that, among young students, they seem scarcely to be regarded.

Leach wants to take the insights of Margulis and the tools of Woese and Mullis and go big. He is a go big or go home kind of guy. He has the ?let?s go kick some butt,? demeanor of a high school wrestling coach one win shy of the state championship. His perspective is that he can only really understand what is going on by seeing samples of feces (from toilet paper wipes) from thousands and thousands of samples. With those samples, Leach wants to study the variation among people in terms of their gut microbes (or at least the ones that end up in feces). This is the perspective of someone new to the field, someone with the good fortune to be able to work after the earlier, harder, times. Leach wants to see with the tools he has inherited. Galileo had a telescope. Anton Von Leeuwenhoek had a single-lens microscope. Leach has bundled up pieces of used Charmin, that and modern genetics.

[Image 1. Jeff Leach sampling home and body microbes in Botswana. The home samples are part of our Wild Life of Our Homes project; yourwildlife.org].

Leach thinks that there are healthy microbial communities and sick ones, that most of us tend to have somewhat to very sick ones and if we understand the variation we might understand how to eat, live, and farm (microbes) in such a way as to favor the healthy ones. This is an exciting idea, but it, like hundreds of other exciting ideas about gut microbes, still needs to be tested. The field is in its stumbling infancy. The field needs the data; Leach needs the data.

Leach is an anthropologist. He specializes in talking to people, not probing them. He needs help and so he has been making phone calls and in a global version of phone tag he has pulled together a super team of microbiologists, and then me, to try to help with his endeavor. The leaders of this large endeavor are now Leach, Rob Knight at the University of Colorado and Jack Gilbert at University of Chicago and Argonne National Lab, but the team is a who is who of the microbial ecologists of the body, intellectual descendents of Margulis, Mullis and Woese. Knight and Gilbert are now leading the technical part of the project and Leach is coordinating its public reach and offering anthropological context. ?Knight and Gilbert will use fancy molecular tools inspired by Woese and Mullis to see which species are in the feces of those who are sampled and then tell the participants about those species. My job, I think, is to help coordinate what we tell folks about those species. I?m the microbial biographer (stay tuned here for the edited biography)

But here is the problem, a problem we have encountered in our own studies of belly buttons and homes (yourwildlife.org). Microbial ecology and evolution take time. Processing samples is slow and budgets are fixed such that the more people are interested in projects, beyond some limit, the more can be understood about the invisible world, but also the longer it takes to get the job done. Leach had the idea to get around this problem by funding his project via Indiegogo (it sounds like a rash you get from being on Leach?s wrestling team, but it is actually a crowd-funding website). Participants will donate funds to have their samples processed, enough funds to cover the cost of processing their samples (which pays for their piece of a robot, a technician and a postdoc?yes, and this is terrible, the robot gets paid the most). As a starting point, he and Rob Knight have decided that if 275,000 are raised, it will be enough to get the project off the ground (again, damned robot). The project is called American Gut (to be followed, one hopes, by Australian Gut, Thai Gut, etc?, following in American Idol footsteps). You can donate here, but there is also a comment section so if you don?t have the cheddar you can always just leave a note.

[Image 2. Rob Knight in his lab at the University of Colorado].

What is interesting and exciting about this project is that, for your money, it does not propose to deliver health miracles, a thinner fitter you or really anything practical in the short term. It proposes instead to produce science, the science of America?s colonic diversity and the science of you. In this era in which science seems to be getting beat up left and right (though mostly right), a time in which the call is to lower taxes and ignore climate change, will Americans pay for such knowledge? Margulis, Woese and Mullis never appear to have gotten their greatest work funded by the federal government. They did it on shoestrings and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. But what if the work the public is willing to pay for is different from the work that tends to get funded, what if the public cares more about the ecology of their bodies than do review panels? This is just what Leach, Knight and Gilbert are hoping for.

Even if Americans won?t pay for their science there is a back up plan. Leach and crew can offer that thing that seems to have even more cache, a world record. I haven?t checked with Guinness, but I am willing to bet that if Leach can really gets thousands of samples he will have the world?s largest collection of pieces of used toilet paper. If not for science or personal knowledge, you can still support Leach in his quest to be the champ.

As for Margulis, Woese, and Mullis? Woese continues to work. Mullis gives lectures. Margulis died last year. I can?t help wondering what she in particular would think of this and other microbiome projects. Her edited biography has just been released. Reading it reminds me of her reckless intellect, but also her battles. She fought her whole life to do what she loved, to study the microbes that she thought (rightly) run and own the world. Now the grandeur and importance of those same microbes have been recognized, enough so that athletes want to know about their microbes and celebrities do too. I have to hope Margulis would want to be sampled, to see her own trillions of symbionts. I think she would; toward the end of her life she was delighted to find a new species of single-celled beast in the pond where she liked to skinny dip. It had been swimming with her all those years, her private mystery. Would that we could have found a new species lurking in her gut too. But the reason I really wish she were still around is to help us think wildly about the data that result from Leach?s samples and those from other projects like our belly button or homes projects, to see the answers so outrageous that even once we articulate them no one will believe them for tens of years.

Giving thanks: Thank you Lynn Margulis, Carl Woese and Kary Mullis for letting us see what was so long invisible. Thank you invisible microbes for letting us exist.

Young Cancer Patients Rarely Get Help, Information On Fertility Issues

When Gina Danford went in to have an 8-pound ovarian tumor removed from her ovary, her prognosis was grim.

Worst case, the cancer had spread and she did not have long to live. Best case, Danford would make it through surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but would never have children. She was 19 at the time.

Her doctors found the tumor was completely contained and Danford was able to forgo chemotherapy and radiation, clinging to a distant hope of one day becoming a mom. Every three months she saw a doctor who monitored her health -- a routine that persisted for nearly a decade, until doctors found a second ovarian mass. That one was benign. Two years later, they found another.

"I had been so fortunate the first few times, I thought, ?Is this it?'" said Danford. "'Is my number up this time??"

Though speed was important, Danford's oncologist urged her to meet with a reproductive endocrinologist -- a physician who specializes in fertility medicine -- before she went in for surgery. She had dealt with cancer for years, but it was the first time a doctor had spoken to her in any depth about fertility preservation options.

"It was hard to think beyond the next doctor's appointment and what that meant, and what we would find out at the next test," Danford, now 37, said. "It was extremely difficult for me to plan for a future when I knew I may not be there to see it."

According to National Cancer Institute estimates, about 70,000 15- to 39-year-olds are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. each year. Research suggests that at least three-quarters of young, childless men and women with cancer want to have children some day, and thanks to advancements in detection and treatment, many now live long enough to have that chance. Recent estimates put the five-year relative survival rate for all cancers at 67 percent, up from just under 50 percent in the 1970s.

But the same treatments that help cancer patients survive -- chemotherapy, radiation and surgery -- can also destroy young survivors' fertility. Chemo and radiation damage a woman's eggs and ovaries, and hurt men's sperm production. Cancers that require surgery on parts of the reproductive system can also lead to infertility. The key, groups like the American Cancer Society stress, is discussing fertility preservation before treatment ever begins.

Yet a growing body of scientific literature suggests that often does not happen.

A widely covered 2011 California-based study, published in the journal Cancer (and co-authored by Danford's reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Mitchell Rosen), found that 61 percent of young women with cancer were at least told about the damage treatments might cause, but only 4 percent actually took steps to preserve their eggs or embryos. Other studies have put rates of fertility counseling between 34 and 72 percent.

"I'd say it's 50-50 at best," said Dr. Kutluk Oktay, director of the division of reproductive medicine and infertility at the New York Medical College.

He co-chaired an American Society of Clinical Oncology panel that, in 2006, released guidelines on fertility preservation in cancer patients. It concluded that oncologists should talk to patients about the possibility of infertility as a result of cancer treatment as early as possible. A revision of that report should be out within the next year, Oktay said.

"We're going to be more forceful," he said. "With the first recommendations, we were a little bit wishy-washy. Now we have more evidence that [fertility preservation] works. We have more options."

The new guidelines will reflect the American Society for Reproductive Medicine's recent decision that egg freezing is not an "experimental" procedure. Pregnancy rates and the health of children born from frozen eggs are comparable to using in vitro fertilization with fresh eggs, the ASRM concluded.

"What this means, is that now when I see these [young] patients, I feel a little better assuring them that egg banking is safe and effective," said Dr. Wendy Vitek, head of the fertility preservation program at the University of Rochester's Strong Fertility center. Embryo freezing is another option, she said, as is freezing ovarian tissues, although the latter is "quite experimental" and reserved for pre-pubertal girls who do not have eggs to freeze. For men, preservation is generally easier -- they can simply freeze sperm samples.

But despite the proliferation of preservation options, treatment is expensive and not generally covered by health insurance. The Oncofertility Consortium estimates that options for women start at $10,000 and can easily run up to $20,000.

For men, costs are lower -- about $250 to $400 per ejaculate, plus yearly storage fees, said Grace Centola, president of the Society for Male Reproduction. Though some non-profits provide financial assistance, costs are often too high for young cancer survivors who are just beginning to earn a living.

Danford, who decided to have her eggs frozen before she had her most recent ovarian tumor (also benign) removed, had no insurance coverage for the procedure. Including the egg retrieval, storage fees and three frozen transfers, she and her husband spent more than $30,000, with the help of a loan from their parents.

But research suggests there are other barriers to treatment, including a July study, which Rosen co-authored in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship. It found that half of reproductive-age, California-based women with cancer were not told about the reproductive health risks from cancer therapy and only 12 percent had received fertility preservation counseling. When asked why they felt their doctors hadn't brought it up, women's reasons were consistent -- among them, an uncertain prognosis, the fact that they already had children and age -- being seen as too young or too old to worry about having kids.

"I wish that [my doctors] had grabbed me by the shoulders and said, 'If you don't harvest [your] eggs, you will not have the possibility of having a child!'" one study participant said.

"The doctors basically said that my chances of having more children weren?t good, but, at least I already had children, so I should be content with that," another participant said. "No one explained to me that there might be other options that I could look at. It was presented to me as if this was just one more consequence of my having cancer, and something I had no choice about."

But in some cases, preservation simply is not an option.

Erika Lade, a graduate student in food studies at New York University and a HuffPost blogger, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer when she was 28. Because the cancer was so aggressive, there was no window for egg harvesting and in-depth fertility counseling would not have changed that. But Lade said she wishes she had received more information about what would happen.

"Nobody said that I had an 85 percent chance my period would come back after I was finished with [the drug] Lupron and chemo," she said.

She confided in friends about her fear that she was going into early menopause and would never be a mother, but it wasn't until the topic "randomly" came up in a conversation with her surgeon that she learned there was, in fact, a good chance she could have a child eventually.

"I was like, 'Whaaat?' No one told me!" Lade said. "You're dealing with so much information in the beginning, there's so much to digest, it gets overwhelming.

In Danford's case, being urged by her oncologist to speak with a fertility specialist that led to her having a baby. Though she said she underestimated how grueling fertility treatment would be, both physically and emotionally, she is thrilled to be mom to Samantha Grace, now 2.

"She's incredible," Danford said. "She's a little person now -- she's talking. She was frozen for almost four years, but she's healthy as can be."

"It wasn't an easy choice, but I think it's a choice every person should have."

Gimme 5: Keys to a Florida win vs. JSU

Gators senior tight end Jordan Reed hauled in five catches for a game-high 85 yards last Saturday in No. 6 Florida's 27-20 comeback win against Louisiana-Lafayette. / Gator Country photo by Curtiss Bryant

When the Florida Gators last took the field, Loucheiz Purifoy?s block and Jelani Jenkins? 36-yard return for a touchdown gave the team an exhilarating 27-20 win against Louisiana-Lafayette.

That play aside, most of the game was a series of underwhelming performances and costly injuries. Quarterback Jeff Driskel sprained his ankle and is out this week.

Chico State Greek activities suspended by president after alcohol overdose death

CHICO ? Chico State University President Paul Zingg today suspended all sorority and fraternity activities due to the recent alcohol overdose of a student and other matters.

Addressing a gathering of the Greek community in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium, he said students don't get a "free pass" for allowing a brother to drink 21 shots on his 21st birthday, and "pass out in his vomit."

He was referring to the case of Mason Sumnicht, who died today of an alcohol overdose, according to the Butte County Coroner's Office.

While Chico State spokesman Joe Wills would not comment on any fraternity affiliation for Sumnicht, the campus newspaper The Orion has reported he was pledging Sigma Pi this semester. A website lists him as a member of that fraternity's flag football, soccer and volleyball teams.

Zingg told the Greeks they will not be able to recruit or have socials until the spring semester, at which time a re-education and reinstatement program will be developed.

Zingg told the group of perhaps 250 students that seven years ago there was a death due to a fraternity hazing, a riot downtown, and other episodes.

He said he met with Greeks then and demanded changes. Things improved greatly, he said, but recently there has been slippage.

Drew Calandrella, the campus vice president for student affairs, also spoke at the gathering, which lasted about 45 minutes.

He pointed to problems involving fraternities and sororities last semester and this semester.

They included incidents of drinking with potential new members, which violates the rules; allegations of hazing; assaults; sexual assaults and "three hazing incidents within the last 30 days."

He said he knew that many Greek organizations are "exemplars" of what Greek life is supposed to be.

"I also know that these kinds of behaviors in one fell swoop can wipe out all the positive side of the ledger," he said.

While the fraternities and sororities are on suspension, they will have to cover up or remove the Greek letters from their houses, he said.

Many of the students seemed shocked by the decision to suspend their activities. Some women cried.

"I don't think it's fair to generalize us all into the negative group," Courtney Wessel, a member of the sorority Sigma Omega Phi, told a reporter from this newspaper.

Other students the reporter asked to comment on Zingg's decision said they didn't want to talk about it.

How does groundwater pumping affect streamflow?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? Groundwater provides drinking water for millions of Americans and is the primary source of water to irrigate cropland in many of the nations most productive agricultural settings. Although the benefits of groundwater development are many, groundwater pumping can reduce the flow of water in connected streams and rivers -- a process called streamflow depletion by wells. The USGS has released a new report that summarizes the body of knowledge on streamflow depletion, highlights common misconceptions, and presents new concepts to help water managers and others understand the effects of groundwater pumping on surface water.

"Groundwater discharge is a critical part of flow in most streams--and the more we pump below the ground, the more we deplete water flowing down the stream," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "When viewed over the long term, it is one big zero-sum game."

Groundwater and surface-water systems are connected, and groundwater discharge is often a substantial component of the total flow of a stream. In many areas of the country, pumping wells capture groundwater that would otherwise discharge to connected streams, rivers, and other surface-water bodies. Groundwater pumping can also draw streamflow into connected aquifers where pumping rates are relatively large or where the locations of pumping are relatively close to a stream.

"Streamflow depletion caused by pumping is an important water-resource management issue across the nation because of the adverse effects that reduced flows can have on aquatic ecosystems, the availability of surface water, and the quality and aesthetic value of streams and rivers," said Paul Barlow, USGS hydrologist and author on the report. "Managing the effects of streamflow depletion by wells is challenging, particularly because of the significant time delays that often occur between when pumping begins and when the effects of that pumping are realized in nearby streams. This report will help managers understand the many factors that control the timing, rates, and locations of streamflow depletion caused by pumping."

Major conclusions from the report:

  • Individual wells may have little effect on streamflow depletion, but small effects of many wells pumping within a basin can combine to produce substantial effects on streamflow and aquatic habitats.
  • Basinwide groundwater development typically occurs over a period of several decades, and the resulting cumulative effects on streamflow depletion may not be fully realized for years.
  • Streamflow depletion continues for some time after pumping stops because it takes time for a groundwater system to recover from the previous pumping stress. In some aquifers, maximum rates of streamflow depletion may occur long after pumping stops, and full recovery of the groundwater system may take decades to centuries.
  • Streamflow depletion can affect water quality in the stream or in the aquifer. For example, in many areas, groundwater discharge cools stream temperatures in the summer and warms stream temperatures in the winter, providing a suitable year-round habitat for fish. Reductions in groundwater discharge to streams caused by pumping can degrade habitat by warming stream temperatures during the summer and cooling stream temperatures during the winter.
  • The major factors that affect the timing of streamflow depletion are the distance from the well to the stream and the properties and geologic structure of the aquifer.
  • Sustainable rates of groundwater pumping near streams do not depend on the rates at which groundwater systems are naturally replenished (or recharged), but on the total flow rates of the streams and the amount of reduced streamflow that a community or regulatory authority is willing to accept.

"Conjunctive management of groundwater and surface-water resources is critical in New Mexico, where our limited surface-water supplies can be impacted by new uses that are predominantly dependent on groundwater pumping," said Mike Johnson, Chief of the Hydrology Bureau in the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer. "This new USGS publication consolidates our understanding of the connection between aquifers and streams and provides a clear, thorough and up-to-date explanation of the tools and techniques used to evaluate streamflow depletion by wells. This report will be very useful to New Mexico's water managers in guiding technical analysis, dispelling common misconceptions, and explaining these complex concepts to decision makers and the public."

The report, which is a product of the USGS Groundwater Resources Program, is titled "Streamflow Depletion by Wells -- Understanding and Managing the Effects of Groundwater Pumping on Streamflow" and is available at http://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1376/.

The Groundwater Resources Program provides objective scientific information and develops the interdisciplinary understanding necessary to assess and quantify the availability of the nation's groundwater resources. The Program has been instrumental in documenting groundwater declines and in developing groundwater-flow models for use in sustainably managing withdrawals. The research and understanding developed through this program can provide water-resource managers with the tools and information needed to manage this important natural resource.

Florida tourism on pace to set record

Published: Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 6:39 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 6:39 p.m.

Florida?s tourism industry remains on track for another record-breaking year, according to data released by the state?s tourism promotions entity.

Visit Florida said that the Sunshine State hosted nearly 22 million visitors during the third quarter, an increase of 3.5 percent when compared with the same three-month period in 2011.

Domestic travelers accounted for 18.9 million of that, a 3.2 percent increase from a year before.

There was a larger percentage increase in the number of Canadians who came to Florida, at 4 percent, while the number of international travelers rose 5.5 percent.

?In today?s highly competitive travel marketplace, we are encouraged by the healthy increase in both domestic and international visitors,? said Will Seccombe, Visit Florida?s acting president and chief executive. ?The balanced growth we?re seeing in visitation from the U.S., Canada and overseas indicates the Florida tourism industry is strong and on pace for another record year.?

The boost in tourism activity also has meant more jobs and taxable sales for the Sunshine State.

Direct travel-related employment rose 1.5 percent to 1,020,200, meaning the addition of 15,000.

Tourism and recreation taxable sales from January through August 2012, the last reported month, were $49 billion. That was increase of 7.5 percent from the same period in 2011.

Hoteliers also were finally able to charge higher rates, a move that had previously been greatly limited by the Great Recession and more frugal travelers.

The average daily room rate rose 3.3 percent, while hotels and motels also were able to fill more rooms. The occupancy rate statewide rose 1.7 percentage points during the third quarter when compared with the same three-month period in 2011.

?Increased sales tax revenue and hotel occupancy rates may not seem flashy, but they are very positive indicators for Florida tourism and the state as a whole,? said Glenn Hastings, Visit Florida?s board chairman and the executive director of the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council.

Southwest Florida has shared in the renewed tourism activity.

Sarasota County, for example, saw its tourism tax collection rise more than 8 percent during the second quarter.

BP reaches agreement with US authorities on Gulf of Mexico spill

Karachi News.Net Thursday 15th November, 2012

The agreement with US government agencies is "subject to court approval, to resolve all federal criminal charges and all claims by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against the company stemming from the Deepwater Horizon accident, oil spill, and response," a statement released by BP stated.

Eleven workers were killed and millions of barrels of crude oil was released into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 due to the explosion on board the Deepwater Horizon rig.

BP has been negotiations with the US government and Gulf Coast states for months to settle billions of dollars of civil and criminal liability claims resulting from the April 20, 2010, oil spill due to the explosion.

A federal indictment unsealed in New Orleans Thursday, BP well site leaders Robert Kaluza and Donald Vidrine have been charged with having acted negligently in their supervision of key safety tests performed on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig before the explosion killed 11 workers in April 2010, reported Tribune wire report.

The indictment says Kaluza and Vidrine failed to phone engineers onshore to alert them of problems in the drilling operation.

Another indictment charges David Rainey, who was BP's vice president of exploration for the Gulf of Mexico, of obstruction of Congress and false statements. The indictment claims the former executive lied to federal investigators when they asked him how he calculated a flow rate estimate for BP's blown-out well in the days after the April 2010 disaster.

Prior to the indictments Thursday, the only person charged in the disaster was a former BP engineer who was arrested in April on charges of obstruction of justice. He was accused of deleting text messages about the company's response to the oil spill.

Earlier in the day, BP in a statement said that in its resolution with the SEC, BP has resolved the Commission's Deepwater Horizon-related claims against the company under Sections 10(b) and 13(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and the associated rules.

BP has agreed to a civil penalty of $525 million, payable in three installments over a period of three years, and has consented to the entry of an injunction prohibiting it from violating certain U.S. securities laws and regulations.

The SEC's claims are premised on oil flow rate estimates contained in three reports provided by BP to the SEC during a one-week period (on April 29 and 30 and May 4, 2010), within the first 14 days after the accident. This resolution is subject to U.S. federal court approval.

In addition, as part of the resolution, the company has agreed to plead guilty to 11 felony counts of misconduct or neglect of ships officers relating to the loss of 11 lives; one misdemeanor count under the Clean Water Act; one misdemeanor count under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act; and one felony count of obstruction of Congress. This resolution is subject to U.S. federal court approval.

Thirteen of the 14 criminal charges pertain to the accident itself and are based on the negligent misinterpretation of the negative pressure test conducted on board the Deepwater Horizon.

BP acknowledged this misinterpretation more than two years ago when it released its internal investigation report.

The energy giant maintained the acceptance of the charges is consistent with BP's position in the ongoing civil litigation "that this was an accident resulting from multiple causes, involving multiple parties, as found by other official investigations."

The remaining criminal count pertains to two BP communications made to a member of Congress during the spill response about flow rate estimates.

As part of its resolution of criminal claims with the U.S. government, BP will pay $4 billion, including $1.256 billion in criminal fines, in installments over a period of five years. BP has also agreed to a term of five years' probation.

Under the resolution with the Department of Justice (DOJ), a total of $2.394 billion will be paid to the National Fish Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) over a period of five years. In addition, $350 million will be paid to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) over a period of five years.

BP has also agreed to take additional actions, enforceable by the court, to further enhance the safety of drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico. These requirements relate to BP's risk management processes, such as third-party auditing and verification, training, and well control equipment and processes such as blowout preventers and cementing.

In addition, BP has agreed to several initiatives with academia and regulators to develop new technologies related to deepwater drilling safety.

The resolution also provides for the appointment of two monitors for four years each. A process safety monitor will review, evaluate and provide recommendations for the improvement of BP's process safety and risk management procedures concerning deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. An ethics monitor will review and provide recommendations for the improvement of BP's Code of Conduct and its implementation and enforcement.

"All of us at BP deeply regret the tragic loss of life caused by the Deepwater Horizon accident as well as the impact of the spill on the Gulf coast region," said Bob Dudley, BP's Group Chief Executive.

"From the outset, we stepped up by responding to the spill, paying legitimate claims and funding restoration efforts in the Gulf. We apologize for our role in the accident, and as today's resolution with the U.S. government further reflects, we have accepted responsibility for our actions."

Under U.S. law, companies convicted of certain criminal acts can be debarred from contracting with the federal government. BP has not been advised of the intention of any federal agency to suspend or debar the company in connection with this plea agreement.

"We believe this resolution is in the best interest of BP and its shareholders," said Carl-Henric Svanberg, BP's Chairman. "It removes two significant legal risks and allows us to vigorously defend the company against the remaining civil claims."

The aggregate amount of the resolution is approximately $4.5 billion, with payments scheduled over a period of six years. As of the end of September 2012, BP's financial statements recorded a charge taken against pre-tax income in relation to the accident and oil spill of $38.1 billion.

This charge included $525 million provided for the SEC settlement.

Thursday's resolution is expected to result in an increase of approximately $3.85 billion to the $38.1 billion charge taken against income as of the end of September.

BP's financial statements as of the end of December 2012 will reflect this additional charge, as well as any other adjustments arising during the fourth quarter. It is anticipated that the cash outflows can be met within BP's current financial framework.

How To Start Online Business In Nigeria

How to Start Online Business In Nigeria

Of late, the internet has become a place of social and business dealings and Nigeria is not left out as she is number 31 on the list of Facebook Statistics By Country, with 6,712,700 Facebook users and the 11th on the list of the Top 20 Countries with Highest Number of Internet Users.

Unfortunately, with so much exposure to the internet, the knowledge of internet marketing and how to earn an income online is still a mystery to lots of Nigerians; those that attempt to learn and earn from the internet either leave the business out of frustration or fall into the hands of scammers. (Note: scammers are not peculiar to any particular race or region but are bound everywhere on the internet).

In order to make sense of what internet marketing is and the ways of earning, it is important to get the training from a genuine trainer who can point one to the right tools necessary for success.

The Challenges

Some of the major challenges faced by Nigerians who want to earn online are:

To start online business, a person should have adequate knowledge and information. In the quest to acquire these, people have wasted money on online trainings organised by marketers who know next to nothing about how to earn money online.

  • Access to Good Internet Connection

Internet businesses can only be done online, if there is no internet connection, there is no business. A major challenge in the country is connectivity. Internet connections are so bad that it could take a whole day to download a document ( this is a fact because it happened to me).

Nigeria is one of the countries that cannot make or receive payment via some online payment methods and most of the time when someone wants to pay for a products online, a sorry message pops up informing that the company do not sell to people from the country (very frustrating). Also, because of the cash culture in the country, most people are not used to the card payment system, therefore, do not own a payment card. This have caused many to miss out on most online opportunities and others to loss interest in businesses that are internet related.

Another challenge is the misconceptions about online marketing. Some of these misconceptions are with reasons while others are baseless. The believe that one does not need to put in any hard work to earn millions of dollars overnight is one of such.

Solutions To These Challenges

To start an online business, it is necessary to get these challenges sorted out and here are some of my recommendations:

The internet is full of information, some are of value and some have no use. The ability to get valuable information from the internet sometimes depend on research skills, time available for the research and what the information is for. To learn internet marketing, there are lots and lots of free training, yes, free online training. The only thing you invest is time and commitment and before you know it you are on your way to earning online.

  • Access to Good Internet Connection:

Access to good connection is possible if you are willing to pay for a good package from any of the internet services provider in the country and if you are serious about starting your online business, then I suggest you do.

Most Nigerian banks, if not all, now offer visa or master cards for online businesses when you open a domiciliary account with them. I will not recommend you pay anyone to open an account for you, better to run your account by yourself.

  • Misconceptions About Online Businesses

Contrary to general opinion, online business is not a ?Get Rich Quick? scheme. It is a business that needs nurturing and dedication like every other and it is a lot of hard work (No Pain, No Gain). One other thing that I like to point out is, it does not matter where you are in the world, you can successfully earn as an internet marketer. In internet marketing, there are no geographical barriers and your potential customers are not limited to the people in your region alone; with internet marketing, the world is your marketplace.

St. Michael's Hospital

TORONTO, Nov. 13, 2012A first-of-its-kind program at St. Michael's Hospital lowers risk of delirium in elderly patients admitted for trauma and decreases the likelihood they will be discharged to a long-term care facility.

The Geriatric Trauma Consultation Service is a program where every patient over 60 admitted to the trauma service is seen by a member of the geriatric team within 72 hours.

This is a big change from previous practice, where only 4 per cent of elderly patients admitted to trauma were seen by a geriatric team member during their stay in hospital.

"Older patients admitted to trauma are very complex," said Dr. Camilla Wong, a geriatrician in the trauma unit at St. Michael's and the lead physician of the project. "They often have pre-existing health issues, resulting in more in-hospital complications and medical consultations. The traditional model addressed these later, but we felt it was necessary to involve the geriatric team at an earlier point to make sure we're providing the best possible care."

The service provides an in-depth assessment of medical, cognitive, functional and psychosocial conditions.

An evaluation of the program was recently published in Annals of Surgery.

The evaluation looked at 238 elderly patients admitted to hospital for trauma before the Geriatric Trauma Consultation Service was put in place and 248 patients after the service had been implemented.

Dr. Wong and colleagues found that the service reduced the risk of developing delirium in hospital by 10 per cent.

"Seeing a reduction in the risk of developing delirium for these patients was a very significant finding," Dr. Wong said. "Developing delirium in hospital has been associated with morbidity, longer length of hospital stay, increased hospital-acquired complications and permanent cognitive decline, such as developing dementia."

For patients who had originally come to hospital from their home, there was also a significant decline in patients being discharged to a long-term care facility. "In older patients, there's a lot more to consider than just treating their traumatic injuries," Dr. Wong said. "More than 30 per cent of the patients who come to the trauma unit are 60 and older so it's important we have programs like this to properly take into account all their needs."

Simple Suggestions For Commercial Property Real Estate Ventures ...

After much consideration, you have decided that commercial real estate dealing is an area you want to explore. This article will serve you as a guide to buying commercial real estate in today?s ever-changing market. The following article contains some helpful tips that will put you on the path towards finding the right commercial real estate property.

Look at the neighborhood you?re thinking about investing into, you want to check things like unemployments rates, income levels, and different rates of expansion so that you have an idea of where the neighborhood stands, and what potential it has in the future. Properties near hospitals, universities or other centers of large numbers of employees tend to sell faster and at higher-than-average values.

Always ask how a broker negotiates, before hiring him or her. Inquire into their specific credentials and training; do not be afraid to ask for references. Also make sure they?re ethical when doing business and can get you the best deals. Ask them to tell you about their past work, including their successes and mistakes.

If you are looking to lease or rent, the issue of pest control is a critical one to address. In some areas, in particular in areas with known populations of pests, this is a very important concern.

TIP! A large commercial property may be a better buy than a smaller one. You may only have planned to buy a five-unit building, but managing 10 or even 50 units will not be any harder.

Prior to negotiating with the lease of your commercial real estate, try to decrease anything that could be a default as you can. This will greatly lessen the likelihood that the tenant might default. This is something you want to avoid.

It is possible to spend less money cleaning up environmental hazards on commercial property. If you possess an ownership interest, you may not be fully responsible for cleanup costs. It can be incredibly expensive to dispose of waste that is not environmentally friendly. Get a report from an environmental assessment company. They tend to be bit pricey, but they will be worth it in the end.

Net Operating Income, the commercial metric for real estate, needs to be understood. Having positive numbers is the only way to ensure success.

To make sure you are working with the right real estate broker, ask what they consider as a success or a failure. Ask them how their results are measured. Keep asking questions until the broker?s strategies are clear to you. You need to understand what these strategies are so that you can evaluate if you are comfortable with them. You and your broker need to agree on these ideas and how to make them work.

TIP! Advertise the commercial property to both locals and non-locals. Many people think that investors who don?t live in their city will have no interest in their property, but this is untrue.

Social Media

Social media is an important tool for keeping brokers and investors appraised of your services. Don?t go online just to make deals and then fade into obscurity once you?re finished. Be a regular participant in social media so that you can increase your customer base.

Have financial statements available to show to potential lenders if you want to purchase commercial real estate. These documents give the banks the information they need in regards to your financial responsibility and how secure their investment would be if they were to give you a loan to meet your goals.

Have an excellent attorney go over all documents pertaining to the financing of a commercial real estate property before signing the paperwork. Make sure you keep your name clear of all threats if you happen to have anything go sour with any real estate endeavors you have set forth for yourself.

TIP! When purchasing commercial real estate, start by knowing your goals for the property. What are your plans? Do you want to lease or start you own business there? Have clear and specific goals before looking for commercial property.

Establish your goals and needs before you start looking at properties. Identify which features in a commercial property are high value to you, and make a list. This can include the number of floors, units, square feet, the building layout, and anything else that is important to you.

When you are picking between commercial properties, think big! The difficulty in securing financing doesn?t increase linearly with the size of the building you are buying. Generally, this is much like the principle of buying in bulk; the more units you buy, the lower the price per unit.

Rates Rise

Take time to learn what the firm considers to be good results. Learn how they determine how much space is needed, the property selection criteria, the negotiation methods, and other details that can affect you. Having an understanding before joining up with them is most helpful to you.

TIP! If you are new to investing, focus on one investment type at a time. Pick one type of property, at first, and pay close attention to it.

A fluctuating interest rate is a real threat for investors. Depending on the economic conditions, you can see rates rise up and down with shocking inconsistency, leaving investors in the dust when interest rates rise dramatically. Be sure to consider the current and long-term economic conditions when shopping for property.

Now that you have read this article, you should feel more informed about the world of commercial real estate. You may have thought you were already well prepared, but look at how much you?ve just learned! Use these commercial real estate insights and guidelines to improve your successes in the market.

Sick of the Gay marriage Rhetoric - Psychology and Mental Health ...

Solitarian wrote:If the benefits were equal, how could the cost be unequal?

Solitarian wrote:I'm not asking that we be provided for.

Are you considering costs and the act of being provided for only in terms of government handouts?
Everything that society produces has an economic cost. It doesn't have to come directly from the government. Even in an anarchic society there are costs. All the things that we grow and manufacture have a cost. All people in a society are provided for in some way, if not, would they still be part of the society?

Solitarian wrote:The economy benefits from spending, not saving, so singles boost the economy with their rampant consumerism.

This is definitely possible, as two single people living independently may each buy a vacuum cleaner whereas a couple may buy only one vacuum cleaner to share between them. But is the goal to sell more vacuum cleaners? Maybe it is. Or maybe it's to save on the cost of producing vacuum cleaners so that some other widget can be produced with those resources instead? :?

Then there's future costs and benefits to consider. Couples are more likely to have children than singles. Children are both the future labour force and the future spenders. Babies also drive immediate spending as apparently they need nappies, toys and stuff.

Solitarian wrote:That comes down to how welfare eligibility is handled, why should liberty be trodden on because of a programs inability to assess people's needs?

Implementing and managing welfare systems incurs costs. For the system to be effective, it needs to be relatively cheap to run. I assume that marriage records are easy to cross-reference and are a reasonable indicator of stable cohabitation.

I guess I won't speculate on the spiritual benefits of marriage than either.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The other night, Nate Silver got a little taste of what things are going to be like for him, post-Election 2012.

The 34-year-old statistician, unabashed numbers geek, author and creator of the much-read FiveThirtyEight blog at The New York Times had gone out for a drink with friends on Manhattan's Lower East Side. But he couldn't stay incognito; immediately, he says, people sitting at the bar recognized him.

He was surprised, but probably shouldn't have been. After all, for 24 hours, ever since his election forecasts had proved uncannily successful ? he correctly predicted the presidential winner in all 50 states, and almost all the Senate races ? he'd been hailed as the election's "other winner," who'd silenced doubters and proved the value of a cool-headed, math-based approach.

That very night, he'd appeared on Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" for the second time in three weeks. "Don't you want to stand up and say, 'I am Nate Silver, bow down to me!!'" Stewart roared, as the bespectacled Silver sat and chuckled. His name was trending on Twitter and he was the subject of a satirical Twitter hashtag, "Drunk Nate Silver." The Hollywood Reporter said he'd "made statistics sexy again." Many called his story a real-life "Revenge of the Nerds" tale.

And, oh, his new book had soared to No. 2 on Amazon, after he linked to it on Twitter an hour after the first network call for President Barack Obama. ("This is probably a good time to link to my book," he'd tweeted at 12:13 a.m. ? the closest he came to gloating.)

Even so, Silver says he wasn't quite prepared for that incident in the bar.

"It's odd," he said Thursday in a telephone interview from his Brooklyn home. "Is this going to happen every day, as opposed to once a month? I still have to get accustomed to this."

Silver, who uses computer models that he runs on a beat-up laptop at home, is quick to acknowledge the accomplishments of others using similar methods. "It's a little strange to become a kind of symbol of a whole type of analysis," he said. And he noted that similar work was being done with, for example, weather, all the time. "You have to give those forecasters way more credit," he said. "Their forecasts have real life-and-death consequences"

In politics, too, others have used similar computer models to predict races. What Silver has done, though, is not only arrive at a formula that uses aggregated polls and other weighted factors to achieve his predictions, but to write about them in an accessible and engaging way.

His father, political science professor Brian Silver, attributes his son's success to a two-pronged drive: "He's driven by a need to get the answers to a problem, but he also is very concerned with the narrative, with telling the story," said the elder Silver, who teaches at Michigan State University.

The father recalls his son at 2 years old, already revealing himself as a prodigy with numbers ? his mother asked him to count to three, and he went to 20. By four, he understood negative numbers, and could multiply in his head.

Needless to say he was a math whiz, but he also was a debating champion, winning competitions in high school. "On the debate team, it was OK to be a geek," Brian Silver explained. Nate then went off to the University of Chicago, where he earned a degree in economics.

A few years in consulting followed. It bored him, but it was during those years that Silver turned his love of baseball into a sophisticated forecasting system of player performance. That became his new career; he sold the system to Baseball Prospectus, and wrote a weekly column there on baseball research.

In 2007, Silver started writing about politics ? at first under a pseudonym, "Poblano." He quickly gained an audience for his forecasts during the presidential primaries. In March of 2008, he began his FiveThirtyEight blog, and a few months later revealed his name.

"People had been thinking Poblano was a major pollster," said his father. "He was just a kid with a B.A. in economics."

With his success in the 2008 race ? he got every state right except for Indiana ? Silver was already a big name. In 2009 he was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People. In 2010, he licensed his blog to The New York Times.

But the 2012 election brought a new level of pressure. While Democrats flocked to his blog and took daily solace in his consistent prediction that Obama would win ? though not by a lot ? commentators on the right were critical, and he was accused of weighting his forecasts too heavily toward Democrats.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, called him a "joke." Silver responded by betting him that Obama would win, a bet that Scarborough didn't take him up on and that was later criticized by the Times ombudsman. (That bet was the poker player in him, Silver says now; he spent a couple years playing serious online poker.)

Much more disturbing, said Silver, were what he called the homophobic comments that some resorted to on the Web. "That was a little shocking," he said. Added his father: "It got very personal."

But Silver says he always felt confident in his projections. "I didn't see any particular reason for the polls to be off the mark," he said. "Republicans said Democrats were oversampled, but without much justification. I felt pretty confident personally." Silver predicted 90.9 percent certainty that Obama would win, and forecast him getting 313 electoral college votes; he has 303 without Florida, which is still counting and could take him to 332.

On Election Day itself, Silver felt nervous, but only because there was nothing left to do. Once the early results started coming in, he relaxed. And then, of course, came vindication. "You know who won the election tonight? Nate Silver," said Rachel Maddow on MSNBC. Even Bret Baier on Fox gave credit on air to Silver. On "The Daily Show," Stewart basically credited Silver with saving the reputation of arithmetic ? and more. "Like, gravity would have been up for grabs," Stewart quipped, if Silver had been wrong.

There have been some gripes that Silver doesn't reveal his actual formula. "He has very carefully explained how he does things," his father answers. "But he's not giving away his code. He shouldn't be expected to do that."

Nate Silver does say, however, that in the future, "Maybe we'll have to be clearer." He also voices concern that precise forecasting could have the frightening effect of influencing voter behavior ? something that obviously doesn't happen in areas like weather. "You don't want to influence the same system you are trying to forecast," he said.

Silver also says he doesn't necessarily expect the same results forever. "I know we're going to have some misses sooner or later," he said, adding that an incorrect forecast on the Senate race in North Dakota is "proof that we can be wrong ? and polls can be wrong." Others have pointed out that Silver's forecasting is, of course, only as good as the polls he is using, since he's not a pollster himself.

For now, though, he's trying to enjoy it all as much as he can.

"When you get into statistical analysis, you don't really expect to achieve fame," he observed wryly. "Or to become an Internet meme. Or be parodied by The Onion ? or be the subject of a cartoon in The New Yorker. I guess I'm kind of an outlier there."

What's ahead for Silver? Turns out, forecasting his own future feels much more difficult than forecasting an election.

"It can be a fulltime job, figuring out what your job is going to be," he quipped.

For now, he has a second book to write, part of a two-book deal. And FiveThirtyEight is set to remain at the Times until mid-2013. After that, he doesn't know yet, though he noted, with understatement: "I know I'll have more opportunities now." But he added: "I'm sure there will be a FiveThirtyEight forecast in 2016."

For now, he prefers to look at life, and life choices, as a poker player, since he loves the game.

"You get steely nerves playing poker," he said. "It's part skill and part luck. You hope you win enough bets to make a living on, right?"
